Public service announcement for Spotify users.

You can find a brilliant version of "District Sleeps Alone Tonight" by Frank Turner on Spotify. It's raw and rough and it's how that song should have been recorded in the first place. (No offense, Ben Gibbard, this is just imho.)

Search for it. Do it NOW.

(Please. Also, please let me know your Spotify "name"? I am still figuring this thing out but I did subscribe to the $5/month service for a trial run.)

I saw Frank Turner and his band Saturday night and it was an amazing show. He's been dubbed "the Billy Bragg of our generation," and while I wouldn't go that far, it's not a terrible comparison. Some politics, some history, some really good love (and anti-love) songs. He's only 30 so his lyrics are a bit immature, and I mean that in the nicest way. This song (and cutest video EVER!) and this one are my current faves.

Andrew Jackson Jihad opened. They were very fun as well...

Public service announcement.

When flying a kite, it's best to choose a day where the American flag over the bank building is whipping in the wind versus hovering slightly and then falling limply toward the pole.

Also, it's best to choose an area devoid of geese:

But Mr. Frog the Kite performed well under duress, and as a result I've checked that off the list, even though Saturday was just a trial run. I look forward to putting MFtK to work on the coast someday soon. FUNemployment should make that a possibility.

If you're considering dicing a jalapeno pepper and then touching your face before washing your hands... DON'T DO IT.

This is your face: awwwww!

This is your face after being touched by hands that just diced a jalapeno pepper: OWWWWW!

Early Wednesday three.

Three PSAs, in no particular order:

  • If you cannot drive in the snow, DO NOT DRIVE IN THE SNOW.
  • If you cannot drive at all ever, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT THINKING ABOUT DRIVING IN THE SNOW.
  • If you hit me with your shopping cart one more effing time I swear to God, Allah and everybody that I will punch you square in the face.
I'm pretty sure that PDX insanity about Arctic Storm 2008TM has progressed to PDX stupidity-bordering-on-utter-Darwin-rudeness. Tonight exiting the grocery store I actually saw someone point to someone who slipped on the ice and say "Oh my God that guy just fell" and keep walking to their car. (I, of course, walked over and asked him if he was OK.)

Otherwise how fun has this storm been! Fingers crossed for a frozen turkey - that would be three snow days in a row.

Attention music lovers... Ben Folds is putting tracks from his recent live shows on iTunes. You can download "Sound of Last Night...This Morning" recorded at Detroit's Fillmore (why is there such a thing in Detroit of all places? SF, Denver, sure - but Detroit?!) starting today.

Don't know Ben Folds? OMG what is WRONG with you already? Sheesh.

Public service announcement.

Best Freddy Rodríguez role ever? El Wray in Planet Terror. Second best Freddy Rodríguez role ever? Federico Diaz in Six Feet Under.

But third best Freddy Rodríguez ever? Guest starring as Carla's brother on Scrubs. Almost as good as Heather Graham's pseudo-guest role. But not quite. And way better than Tara Reid's pseudo-guest role.

Sidenote PSA: I think I've seen just about every episode, some more than once, and Scrubs is one of the best shows of my generation. After Buffy. And House. And Firefly. And Seinfeld. And Curb Your Enthusiasm. And the Wire. And possibly Angel after Spike joined the cast.

There, I said it.

Public service announcement. Sort of.

Dear Friends,

We may have thought we wanted a woman on a national political ticket, but the joke has really been on us, hasn't it? Are you as sick in your stomach as I am at the thought of Sarah Palin as Vice President of the United States ?

Since Palin gave her speech accepting the Republican nomination for the Vice Presidency, Barack Obama's campaign has raised over $10 million dollars.

Some of you may already be supporting the Obama campaign financially -- but want to do more -- anything. I am horrified by Palin's selection, furious, and frightened by it for many reasons, one of which is her position on women's issues. May I pass along the following fiendishly brilliant idea?

Make a donation to Planned Parenthood. Of any amount, in Sarah Palin's name. Here's the best part: when you make a donation to PP in her name, they'll send her a card telling her that the donation has been made in her honor. It won't change the election but it will support an important organization and it will make women's voices heard. (And even if this was cooked up by a PP person -- I don't care!)

Here's the link to the Planned Parenthood website:
http://www.plannedparenthood.org

You'll need to check "make honorary or memorial gift," and fill in the name of the person you want to "honor," i.e. Palin. Fill in the address to let PP know where to send the "in Sarah Palin's honor" card. If you use the address for the McCain campaign headquarters, they'll get the message.

McCain's headquarters address:
McCain for President
1235 S. Clark Street
1st Floor
Arlington, VA 22202

Please free to send this along to all your women -- and men -- friends and urge them to do the same.

Daytime television is really, really bad.

Really.

Another public service announcement.

Looks like they will also be Blue Rooming the Outside Lands Music & Arts festival, which features an impressive lineup as well. This time, I am on email alert. Ready and waiting. For Radiohead. In Golden Gate Park. After dusk. Fucking beautiful, this interweb shit.

But all this makes me wonder - will they soon be streaming Bumbershoot? The Bridge School show? Coachella? Will I, maybe someday soon, be able to "go to" South By Southwest without leaving the comfort of my living room?

Part of me isn't sure how I feel about that. The other part is already planning to call in sick... and wondering when I will have to start paying for this newfound voyeurism.

Public service announcement.

Lollapalooza streamed live online this year.

Unfortunately, I only found this out today at 3:30pm, so I missed Rogue Wave, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Bloc Party, Mates of State, Wilco, the Go! Team, Jamie Lidell and Broken Social Scene. So in other words, all the good stuff.

But Love & Rockets at 6:15pm should be amusing. And over by 7:15pm. Hooray for west coast living!

Public TMI service announcement.

(OK, this is probably WAY TOO MUCH INFORMATION but I thought it was important enough to share, given the scare when I woke up this morning, and several other mornings over the past months. So if this post calms just one person, it's worth knowing I posted about my pee.)

You may recall that I've taken to eating beets lately as part of my newfound cooking habit. Beet salads, beet and goat cheese sandwiches, and last night, just a bowl of roasted beets with candied walnuts and goat cheese. I upped my beet intake partly because I love the smell of roasting beets, partly because I like how they taste and partly because I know they are really good for you. (OK... and partly because it gave me an excuse to eat candied walnuts and goat cheese.)

While I was tossing and turning this morning after seeing shocking pink, as opposed to a very faint pink on previous mornings which caused mild concern until I forgot about it 5 minutes later (I've never been much of a hypochondriac, or one to pay attention to any alarming symptoms, for that matter), it finally dawned on me that it probably had something to do with my dinner last night. Beets stain everything they touch, why wouldn't they turn pee a different color? Turns out, they do.

Isn't science cool?

You may also recall that I've been pretty tired lately, and had attributed it to a combo of fresh air, more exercise and better nutrition (the latter of which made sense at the time for some unknown reason). Apparently, even though beets contain iron, if they turn your pee pink it means you're lacking iron, and iron deficiency makes you tired. I've always been slightly iron deficient because of the lack of red meat in my diet but never noticed this level of fatigue before. (Does wine contain iron? What about pizza? That was pretty much my diet before I moved.)

So today I'm going to buy some iron supplements, eat at least one meal per day that involves beans and/or spinach coupled with something high in Vitamin C for a week, then do another beet pee and energy level test.

Isn't science fun?

________________
There is conflicting information on the Interweb about soy as a good source of iron versus it being an iron-absorbing inhibitor, same for spinach actually, but it looks like wine=bad but pizza=good on the iron scale. I've found nothing either way on beer - and of course I will confirm all this with my new doctor when I start working, but in the meantime my dinner plans tomorrow night (Sparky's pizza and a fine porter) should be A-OK. :)

The theme song from the second season of The Wire isn't as good as the first season's theme song. But the second season rocks so far.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled day.

Public service announcement.

MTV is good for 1.5 things these days. The "1" is their movie awards. Totally loose, random presenters, excellent performances, the absolute antithesis of the Oscars. And you just don't care who wins.

The ".5" is their obsession with Usher. Damn, that man is fine.

Public service announcement.

I confess that I am posting this without doing 100% of the research on this issue, simply because someone else I trust did 100% of the research and sent me the information. And also, simply because I can't believe we are still conducting aerial pesticide spraying in this country at all. Really? Has technology not advanced far enough to prevent this need?

STOP AERIAL PESTICIDE SPRAYING!
The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has announced plans to resume aerial pesticide spraying for the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM) in summer of 2008. The campaign began in 2007 in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties using a synthetic pheromone along with other chemicals encased in microscopic plastic capsules. CDFA will expand the program to the San Francisco Bay Area with plans to continue spraying each month for up to 5 years or indefinitely until the moth is eradicated.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE LBAM SPRAYING?
1) Hundreds of people in Santa Cruz and Monterey County have reported adverse health reactions. The spray has not been tested for long-term human toxicity and is being applied in microscopic plastic capsules that could pose inhalation risks.

2) The spray contains ingredients that are highly toxic to aquatic species, as well as surfactants, that might have contributed to algae bloom (red tide) and the drowning of hundreds of waterfowl.

3) Biologists agree that the spraying - an outdated, unsustainable, expensive pest control method - will not eradicate the moth. The CDFA should switch to a control vs. an eradication program using least-toxic methods that farmers already apply, e.g. pheromone traps or sticky ties.

4) CDFA itself says the moth has done no crop damage in California to date. Priority must be given to public and environmental health and safety over speculative economic loss.

5) The aerial spray program disproportionately impacts vulnerable segments of the population, including those with the recognized disability of multiple chemical sensitivity, who are in many cases forced to relocate, and the homeless, who have no option to protect themselves from spraying.

[Ed. note: it's also a really cute little moth! I love moths.]

More information that has been vetted by scientists and other activists.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

  • Sign the petition at www.stopthespray.org, get informed and become active!
  • Contact the media: newspapers, weeklies, radio and television stations - voice your concern.
  • Ask Governor Schwarzenegger and CDFA Secretary Kawamura to stop the spray program and shift to sustainable methods of least-toxic pest control.
  • Ask your Assemblymember to support proposed legislation to stop spraying without consent and safety data and to do whatever they can to stop the spraying until legislation can be passed.
  • Ask your federal Congressional representatives and Senators to tell USDA to support safe pest control and to lift the USDA quarantine of California crops from areas where the light brown apple moth has been found.
